Can you do interior painting in the winter in NH?

Yes. Why winter suits interior work in New Hampshire, and how heat and ventilation help the paint cure.

Yes. Interior paint needs the room and the wall surface to stay above the product's minimum temperature, and a heated New Hampshire home already does that. Sherwin-Williams' Emerald Interior, for example, is applied at temperatures above 50°F. Winter is also when exterior work stops, so it is often the easiest season to get interior work on a painter's calendar. The real winter questions are airflow and steady heat, not the date.

How warm does a room need to be for interior paint?

Check the product's data sheet; the minimum is printed there. Many interior latex paints call for 50°F or warmer, which describes almost every lived-in room in January. The same data sheet gives dry times measured at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. For Emerald Interior, that is dry to the touch in one hour and ready to recoat in four.

Drying and recoat times are temperature, humidity, and film thickness dependent.

Surface temperature matters as much as air temperature. Exterior walls, especially in older homes with less insulation, can run colder than the middle of the room on a very cold day. Keep the heat steady through the job and overnight, rather than letting the house cool down overnight and turning the heat up hard in the morning, which can bring condensation onto cold surfaces.

Why is winter a good time for interior painting in NH?

Exterior paint keeps curing after it goes on. Sherwin-Williams' exterior guidance says the temperature should ideally stay in the product's suggested range, and above the dew point, for at least 48 hours after application, so in New Hampshire we paint exteriors from May to October. Interior work happens inside a heated house, so it can be scheduled year-round. Once the exterior season ends, the calendar opens up for interiors.

  • Scheduling: winter dates are usually easier to get than spring or early summer dates.
  • Planning ahead: rooms finished in winter are done before spring listings and summer gatherings.
  • Steady conditions: a heated house is a more predictable place to paint than a humid July week.

How do you ventilate when the windows are closed?

This is the honest trade-off. EPA's own painting guidance suggests scheduling painting for fall or spring, when windows are easier to leave open. And EPA's indoor air pages note that levels of several organic compounds average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. Winter painting still works well; it just needs a plan for airflow.

  • Choose low-VOC, water-based products. Emerald Interior, for example, is rated under 50 grams per liter.
  • Set a box fan in a window of the room being painted, blowing out, even with the window only partly open.
  • Do not count on kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans. EPA warns that they do not always vent outdoors.
  • Close off the rooms being painted from the rest of the house, and keep the heat on.
  • Follow the label of every product, as EPA advises.

What about the paint itself in cold weather?

Paint left in an unheated garage or truck overnight can be too cold to apply well, and many latex paints must not freeze; the can says so. Keep materials inside the heated house for the length of the job. Some specialty primers tolerate cold better than paint does. Zinsser's shellac-based B-I-N, for example, can be applied in freezing temperatures, but solvent primers bring ventilation needs of their own.

What should you ask a painter about winter work?

  • Which products will you use, and what minimum temperature does each data sheet give?
  • How will you ventilate the rooms you are painting while the windows are mostly closed?
  • Where will the paint and materials be kept overnight?
  • Which rooms will be closed off each day, and in what order?
  • Does the written quote include the same prep and coats you would do in summer?

A painter who answers those in writing has thought about winter work before, and the quote will show it.

Does winter work disrupt the house more?

Not much more than in any other season. Interior work moves room by room, the rooms being painted are closed off, and the rest of the house stays in use. A tidy site is a safe site. At the end of every workday, we pack up our tools, vacuum work areas, and ensure your home remains livable throughout the project duration.

If you are planning a sale in spring, winter is also a sensible time to settle colors. Our color consultations use real paint drawdowns on your walls, so you see each option in the low winter light as well as under your lamps.

Frequently asked questions

Is it OK to paint inside when it is cold outside?
Yes, as long as the room and the walls stay above the paint's minimum temperature, often 50°F, and the heat stays steady through the job. Check the product data sheet for its exact limits.
How long does interior paint take to dry in winter?
Data sheet dry times are measured at 77°F and 50% humidity. Emerald Interior, for example, is dry to the touch in one hour and ready to recoat in four under those conditions. A cooler or more humid room takes longer.
Can I paint with the windows closed in winter?
You still need airflow. Use low-VOC paint, run a window-mounted box fan blowing out, keep doors to the rest of the house closed, and do not rely on bathroom or kitchen fans that may not vent outdoors.
When is exterior painting season in New Hampshire?
We paint exteriors from May to October. Sherwin-Williams advises keeping the temperature in a product's suggested range, and above the dew point, for at least 48 hours after application. Interior work can be scheduled year-round.
