Lead-safe painting

Painting in homes built before 1978, with the containment and cleanup the EPA lead rules require.

What it involves

What lead-safe work involves

Lead-safe painting is painting work in a home built before 1978, done under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, NAT-F349471-1.

Before we disturb old paint, we seal off the work area with plastic sheeting and keep family and pets out of it. We use wet scraping and sanding to keep dust down, collect debris as we go, clean with a HEPA vacuum and wet wipes, and check the cleaning before the area is handed back.

Where lead-safe practices apply

  • Interior repaints in homes built before 1978
  • Exterior scraping and repainting on older siding and trim
  • Windows, doors and trim where old paint is disturbed
  • Older homes being prepared for sale
  1. Contain

We seal the work area with plastic sheeting, cover floors and vents, and post warning signs.

  2. Work wet and clean

We wet-scrape and sand to limit dust, and collect debris as we go.

  3. Clean and verify

We HEPA-vacuum and wet-wipe, then verify the cleaning before you use the room again.

Why it matters

Careful work in older homes

The end-of-day update

What we finished, what comes tomorrow, a photo, and anything we need from you.

One point of contact

The person who quotes your job is the person who inspects it with you at the end.

After the work

A clean room, handed back

When the cleaning is verified, the containment comes down and the room is yours again. Your daily update tells you which rooms are clear to use that evening.

An empty, sparsely furnished bedroom with pale yellow walls, a medium-brown wood floor, a single bed with a light gray upholstered headboard and gray knit blanket against the back wall, a white three-drawer dresser on the right, a white double-hung window on the left, and a round off-white braided rug in the foreground center.

Lead-safe painting questions

Request a walkthrough
Do painters in NH need EPA certification for older homes?

Paid work that disturbs paint in a home built before 1978 falls under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, which requires a certified firm. We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm (NAT-F349471-1). For homes built before 1978, we follow strict RRP (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) protocols to ensure lead dust is contained and disposed of safely.

How do we know if our home has lead paint?

If your home was built before 1978, we treat painted surfaces as if they may contain lead unless testing shows they do not, and we follow lead-safe work practices.

Can our family stay home during the work?

Usually yes. We keep family and pets out of the contained work area until the cleaning is verified, and your daily update says which rooms are clear to use.

Can we check your certification?

Yes. Search for New Light Painting or NAT-F349471-1 in the EPA's lead-safe firm locator at https://cdxocsppapps.epa.gov/ocspp-oppt-lead/firm-location-search.
